Program Introduction

Thank you for your interest in the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System Dietetic Internship Program. The program has been granted candidacy accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as of November 3, 2023.

The VA Southern Nevada Health Care System (VASNHS) Dietetic Internship (DI) Program will be offered at the VASNHS Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The program will be available to eligible trainees who have, by program start date, completed a minimum of a master’s degree at a US regionally accredited university or college and course work approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The program will be available to eligible trainees who are concurrently enrolled in University of Alabama's online MS in Human Nutrition program starting in the 2025 school year. The dietetic internship program length is 9 months (36 weeks), with 1152 supervised practiced hours. Of the 1152 hours, 640 hours are clinical – both inpatient and outpatient; 240 are food service and administration/management; 280 hours are orientation, community/health promotion, enrichment/elective, and staff relief; 88 hours are in alternate practice experiences, such as simulations. The program will support advocating for the field of dietetics as healthcare continues to evolve with patient care services, access, and healthcare quality measures and outcomes. Further, the program will support cutting-edge research and enriched experiences to develop and prepare individuals to serve as future dietetic professionals and leaders within the field of dietetics.
