Dietetic Internship Program
Lexington VA Health Care System Dietetic Internship Program Financial Information
There is no application fee for VA Dietetic Internship Programs. Also, we do not charge tuition to enroll in our program. The VA covers background checks, physical exams, and certain immunizations for trainees. Our program does not cover the costs of application fees, housing, meals, personal transportation, books, professional association dues or meeting attendance, registration exam or supplemental resources.
Costs to the intern may include:
- DICAS Application Fee $50 for the first application submitted, and $25 for each additional application
- Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Membership (Student) $109
- Kentucky AND Annual Conference ~$95
- Bluegrass AND student cost per seminar $15
- Health Insurance: Intern must provide own health insurance
- Resources: RDN exam preparation and other supplemental resources are at the expense of the intern. Access to Nutrition Care Manual, eNCPT, Evidence Analysis Library and UpToDate are provided by the sponsoring organization.
- Vehicle and insurance cost – varies
- Monthly Parking Fee for Bowling Campus ~$40
- Housing in Lexington: Information about apartments located near the VA Medical Center can be obtained by checking various apartment locator websites online, like apartments.com. Becoming a roommate with another intern may be desirable and cost-effective.
Stipend
For the academic year starting in August 2026 and beyond, interns will receive a stipend through the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA). The stipend is estimated to be $24,000 for the duration of the internship and will be paid by an hourly rate
This program does not offer financial aid or scholarships. It may be possible to defer student loans while completing the dietetic internship. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers a variety of scholarships to dietetic interns.
