Dietetic Internship Program

There is no VA dietetic internship application fee, and we do not charge tuition to attend the internship program. VA coordinates with the Office of Academic Affiliation for potential stipends for trainees and covers the cost of background checks as well as access to electronic medical texts. There is no VA dietetic internship application fee, and we do not charge tuition to attend the internship program. Cost of living during the internship depends upon your choice of living arrangements. The Department of Veterans Affairs does not provide meals or housing. Interns may choose to share an apartment. Meals can be purchased in the Canteen Service cafeteria, or lunch can be carried from home. Please note the items listed below are estimated expenses.

Estimated Dietetic Internship Program Expenses
- Application Fee for Internship: NONE; DICAS: $50
- Dues for Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics student membership: $58 annually
- Dues for Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics student membership: fee included in Academy membership
- Apartment Rental: estimated at $1200/ month (1 bedroom apartment)
- Utilities (electricity/gas/water/phone): estimated at $150-$200/month
- Food, uniform, and personal supplies: varies
- RD Exam Review Course: provided by the internship
- RD Exam Application Fee: $225
- Books, papers and other supplies: none required
Parking and Transportation:
Dietetic Interns are responsible for their own transportation to all off-campus clinics, affiliate rotation sites, field trips, etc. Parking is not provided by CMC VAMC, however off-campus parking is available in the University City neighborhood in Philadelphia. Public transportation in Philadelphia is provided by SEPTA. Commuting is an essential part of the program and reliable transportation is recommended.
Liability Insurance:
Interns are protected from personal liability while at VA healthcare facilities. Additional liability insurance can be purchased through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a student member if interns are interested.
Health Insurance:
Dietetic interns at CMC VAMC are not eligible for health insurance benefits at the VA. However, interns are eligible to use employee health for work related health problems or injuries.
Scholarships:
CMC VAMC does not currently offer scholarships or financial assistance to dietetic interns. Please see the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics webpage eatright.org for a list of scholarships provided by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In addition to the Academy scholarships, the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (PAND) may also offer scholarships for dietetic interns. Student Loans:
No student loans or financial aid are offered through the VA given the CMC VAMC DI Program is a stand-alone internship and is not affiliated with a university. However, interns may be eligible for a loan forbearance (discuss with your loan institution for more information).
