Dietetic Internship Program
VA Caribbean Healthcare System (San Juan) Dietetic Internship Program
Program Information
Becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
- There are multiple pathways to becoming an RDN. You can find more information about all pathways here:Become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (eatright.org).
- Here, we will focus on the Didactic Programs in Dietetics (DPD) + Dietetic Internships (DI) Option.
Steps:
- Complete a bachelor's degree and receive a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). The DPD provides all the prerequisite and core dietetic courses needed for preparation for the supervised practice portion of the RDN.
- Complete a master's degree and apply for a Dietetic Internship Program or a combined DIP/Master's Degree Program.
- The Dietetic Internship is pivotal for completing the supervised practice experiences portion. A DI program offers a wide range of experiences in clinical, administrative, or community settings. These experiences provide hands-on work experience and teamwork and open doors to post-internship work opportunities.
- After completing a dietetic internship and graduate program, the next step is to take and pass the national Registration Examination for the RDN credential. This examination is administered by the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR).
- The Board Examiners of Puerto Rico have approved that only students who have passed the RDN Certification Examination from the University of Puerto Rico's DPD and presented the evidence to the Board Examiners are exempt from taking the local Nutritionist and Dietitian Licensure exam to work in Puerto Rico.

This program learning experiences qualifies the individual as an entry-level dietitian.
- Upon successful completion of the internship and, if applicable, the Master's Program, the Dietetic Internship Program Director will provide the intern with a copy of the Verification Statement. The individual then is eligible to take the registration examination for dietitians.
- To work as a Dietitian or Nutritionist in Puerto Rico, the intern who completed their DPD in PR must present evidence of RDN registration to Puerto Rico's Board Examiners to be exempt from taking the local Nutritionist and Dietitian Licensure Exam. However, a Puerto Rico state license is not required to work at a VA Facility.
- After completing accredited dietetic internship at VA Medical Center, the dietetic interns are eligible for a dietitian position grade GS-7 or GS-9 within the VA System.
IMPORTANT: “While state interpretations of statutes may vary, it is ACEND's considered opinion that the program meets the educational requirements for dietetics licensure and certification in all states. However, completing an ACEND-accredited academic program alone does not qualify an individual for licensure or certification as a dietitian in any state. Individuals should review their state's licensing statutes and regulations to understand the specific requirements, including supervised practice and examinations, needed to obtain a dietetics license. More information about state licensure and certification can be found at this link: State Licensure.”
