Minneapolis VA Healthcare System

    Seasons in Minneapolis

Minneapolis-Saint Paul is the most populous urban area in the state of Minnesota. Built around the Mississippi, Minnesota and St Croix rivers, the area is nicknamed the Twin Cities for its two largest cities. The Twin Cities is home to the Mall of America and is considered the capital for arts in the Upper Midwest.

There is a very high per capita attendance of theatrical, musical and comedy events across the area attributed to the large number of colleges and universities providing strong supply and demand for arts.

There are a number of lakes and a very extensive park system for recreation. Hiking, biking, and rollerblading are enjoyed during summer months, while skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling are popular in the winter months.

For foodies, there is a bustling food and drink scene, including Eat Street on Nicollet Avenue with foods from all cultures, a number of food halls, and several restaurants owned by James Beard award-winning nominees and chefs (Christina Nguyen of Hai Hai won most recently).

For sports fans, the Twin Cities have multiple venues for cheering on hometown favorites, including Target and CHS fields for baseball, Target Center for basketball, US Bank Stadium for football, Xcel Energy Center for hockey, and Allianz Field for soccer matches.

Average temperatures range from 80 degrees in July to 4 degrees in January. An average of 56 inches of snow falls in the winter.

The main airport is the Minneapolis-St Paul International airport, which is a hub for Delta airlines. The airport is located about 5 miles from the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The medical center is also on the Hiawatha Line light rail system and provides easy transportation downtown for events or to the airport for travel. Reimbursment may be available for employees taking public transportation.
